My name is Walter Trammell and I am one year old. When I was first born my parents went through a lot with me. I was in the NICU for my first two weeks of life. I had a blood clot in the right side of my brain the size of a golf ball. The doctors had no idea where it came from and why I had it. Because of the blood clot in my brain I had seizures and was immediately put on a medication called Phenobarbital. After two weeks of being in the NICU I was released and sent home with my parents, but the doctors still had no idea what was wrong with me. One week later I was taken to the emergency room because I struck a high fever. |
That one night of being in the emergency room landed me three weeks of being hospitalized at Children’s hospital in Minneapolis, until the doctors found a diagnosis. I am currently diagnosed with hemophilia A -- the most severe kind of hemophilia. Hemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn't clot normally. If you have hemophilia, you may bleed for a longer time than others after an injury. You also may bleed inside your body (internally), especially in your knees, ankles, and elbows.
When my mommy and daddy got my diagnosis they took action, and did a lot of research. Hemophilia is inherited, and because my mom was adopted we’re not really sure where my hemophilia came from. I am currently taking an antibiotic called Factor VIII, and it helps keep my blood clotted. I take my Factor VIII once a day, and continue to play like a normal child.
Problems I have: When I fall I easily get bruised. When I take my medicine sometimes I bleed a little longer than I should.
I appreciate all my doctors at Centra Care and at St. Cloud Hospital for all the things they did for me. I went through a lot, but I’m here and healthy, and I hope to continue to stay that way. |
