LIFE program helps patients improve health and reduce weight

From Spotlight on Health Jan./Feb. 2007

After experiencing elevated cholesterol levels and signs of pre-diabetes, I knew I had to change something very soon,” said Beverly Walklin, 65, of Rockville, who has tried a variety of diet programs.

Walklin decided to join the LIFE (Lifestyle, Food & Exercise) program at CentraCare Clinic - Women & Children. The LIFE program includes a pre-screening exam, lab work and six weekly seminars. The two-hour seminars focus on diet, exercise and nutrition, as well as practical and behavioral aspects. The last class covers menu planning and food preparation tips.

“LIFE program participants learn how the most common deadly diseases are associated with unhealthy food choices and lack of physical activity,” said David Kroska, M.D., Ob/Gyn and director of the LIFE program. “Adherence to sensible nutrition and a program of simple exercise is the answer to weight control and a lifetime of health.”

“I really appreciated the way Dr. Kroska presented the healthy food options to us at one of the classes without making us feel embarrassed about being overweight,” said Walklin.

St. Cloud resident Harriet Terry, 55, appreciated the expertise of the class presenters.

Harriet Terry has changed her lifestyle and
enjoys cooking with healthy ingredients.

“The classes helped me to start living a more healthy lifestyle,” Terry said. “And, they helped me approach this program from a positive perspective instead of focusing on what I can’t have.”

Participants also receive three monthly individual coaching sessions with staff.

“It’s not just one thing that makes the program work, there are many,” said Terry. “In order to achieve long-term, healthy lifestyle changes, the successful process of becoming healthier is more important to me, than just the end result.”

“I have never been able to have a mindset like I do now,” Walklin added. “I continue to choose healthier foods because they make me feel better. It’s really become a way of life for me.”
