New technology improves careFrom Spotlight on Health - Fall 2010

St. Cloud Hospital has a long history of providing the most advanced medical care, from the Cobalt Therapy machine used to treat cancer in 1969 to the hospital’s first computed tomography (CT) scanner in 1978, to the latest in imaging, surgery and wound care offered today.

New imaging technology improves diagnosis time

Imaging Services at St. Cloud Hospital is the first in Minnesota to upgrade to the Aquilion® ONE 320-slice CT scanner. “Patients in Central Minnesota now have the most advanced imaging technology possible,” said Gene Fischbach, director of Diagnostic Imaging at St. Cloud Hospital.

“With this scanner, we provide rapid and accurate diagnosis to patients when time is critical, helping physicians reduce time in diagnosing life-threatening conditions. The new scanner has the ability to scan an entire organ in a single rotation, which is a huge advantage in CT imaging.”

The Center for Surgical Care at St. Cloud Hospital offers enhanced care for surgical patients with the addition of the da Vinci® Si robotic surgery system.

St. Cloud Hospital is only the second hospital in Minnesota with the da Vinci Si, and one of only a few in the nation to use multiple da Vinci systems. The da Vinci Si provides magnification 10 times more than what the human eye can see and tools with range of motion far greater than the human hand. These enhancements allow treatment of more complex kidney, bladder and pelvic floor reconstruction cases and is used for hysterectomies and prostatectomies.

CentraCare develops Wound Center

The CentraCare Wound Center opens this fall under the medical direction of Denise Buruse, DO. The center offers the latest in hyperbaric oxygen therapy used to aggressively treat patients with chronic wounds and conditions, such as pressure and diabetic ulcers, non-healing surgical wounds and minor burns.

All outpatient wound care will be provided by Dr. Buruse and a panel
of five physicians from local clinics with specialized training in wound care.

“Treatment plans are individually customized to maximize healing,” said Bob Johnson, executive director of the Central Minnesota Heart Center at St. Cloud Hospital and administrative lead for the CentraCare Wound Center. “We are targeting healing 88 percent of difficult wounds within 14 weeks.”
