Imaging Services - Patient Instructions
Computed Tomography CT or CAT Scan of Abdomen
A CAT scan of the abdomen is an x-ray used to detect abnormalities in the abdomen such as tumors, cysts, aneurysms, foreign objects, bleeding or enlarged organs.
Radiation is used for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.
Before your CAT scan, do not eat or drink anything for three hours. Depending on what the reason is for your exam, you may be scheduled to arrive one hour prior to your scan to drink a contrast material. This will help make structures in your body easier to see.
During the exam you will lie on a table that moves through the scanner as pictures are taken. Contrast material (x-ray dye) may be used for the exam by either an injection into your vein and/or liquid for you to drink. Oral contrast will take 30-90 minutes. Notify your doctor if you are allergic to x-ray dye. You may be asked to abstain from eating or drinking for a period of time before the exam. The scan takes about 20 minutes to perform.
After the scan, you may resume your regular diet. If x-ray dye is used, drink extra fluids (if you are not on a fluid restriction) to help flush the dye through your system.
After your exam is read by a radiologist, your doctor will receive a report of the findings and will discuss them with you.
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
