Computed Tomography CT or CAT Scan of the Appendix

A CAT scan is an x-ray used to detect abnormalities in the body. It is capable of detecting inflammation in or around the appendix using a contrast material (x-ray dye) to highlight the area. If you are allergic to x-ray dye, notify your doctor.

Before your CAT scan, do not eat or drink anything for 3 hours. 1 ½ hours before your scan you will drink a contrast material. This must move through your system before the scan. This will help make structures in your body easier to see.

During the scan, x-ray dye is injected through a vein in your arm. X-rays are then taken as the table moves through the scanner. The exam takes about 10 minutes.

After the exam, drink extra fluids to flush the dye through your system.

After a radiologist reads your exam, your doctor will receive a report within 24-48 hours of the findings and will discuss them with you.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
