Cystogram/Voiding Cystogram

A cystogram and voiding cystogram is an x-ray of the bladder, ureters and urethra. It is used to determine whether the bladder empties completely when you urinate. It also is used to diagnose reflux (in which urine backs up to the kidneys instead of flowing out through the urethra). A cystogram may detect abnormalities such as stones, tumors, or damage due to injury.

We will be using radiation for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.

During the exam, a catheter will be placed in your bladder. Your bladder will then be filled with contrast material. After your bladder is full, x-rays are taken. If you are having a voiding cystogram, x-rays will be taken as you empty your bladder. The exam takes about 45 minutes to complete.

After the exam, watch for any signs of a urinary tract or bladder infection such as a fever, urinary frequency, burning or urgency. Contact your doctor with any of these symptoms. Drinking extra fluids for the next 2-3 days after the exam will decrease the chances of developing an infection.

After your exam is read by a radiologist, your doctor will receive a report of the findings and will discuss them with you.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your doctor or contact Imaging Services at (320) 255-5619.
