Discogram

A discogram is an exam used to determine the source of your back discomfort. A contrast material (x-ray dye) is injected into one or more of the discs in your back in order to elicit the discomfort you have been experiencing. This exam is diagnostic and not therapeutic.

Notify your doctor or nurse if you are allergic to x-ray dye.

Before your exam, do not eat for 4 hours. Certain medications may increase your risk of bleeding and may need to be held prior to your procedure. You may resume these medications the day after your procedure unless otherwise instructed.

During the discogram you will lie on your stomach on the table. After numbing up your skin, the radiologist will place a needle in your back and inject x-ray dye in an attempt to elicit the same discomfort you have been experiencing. Frequently more than one disc is injected. The radiologist may order a CT scan after the injections to visualize any disc abnormalities that become outlined by the x-ray dye.

After your exam you should rest for the day and avoid strenuous activity. Notify the doctor if you experience persistent headaches, neck pain or signs of infection such as fever and redness, swelling or drainage at the injection sites.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
