Enteroclysis
An enteroclysis is an x-ray using barium to visualize the entire small intestine. It is used to detect abnormalities or obstructions.
We will be using radiation for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.
Two days before your enteroclysis, start to follow a low residue diet, which means avoid fresh vegetables and fresh fruits, whole grains, nuts and beans, and restrict milk products to 1-2 servings. Your doctor may provide you with a more complete explanation of the diet restrictions.
The day before the exam, follow a clear liquid diet which includes clear broth, jello, non-pulpy juices, black coffee or tea. Then have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam. You may continue to take your medications. If you are diabetic, please discuss the use of your diabetic agents with your doctor while on this diet.
During the enteroclysis, a small rubber tube is inserted through your nose and into your small intestine. Prior to inserting the tube, your throat is sprayed with a numbing agent. Barium is then pumped slowly into the intestine. X-rays are taken as the barium flows through your intestine. You may be asked to roll in various positions to obtain these pictures. As the barium flows in, you may have a full feeling in your abdomen. The exam takes about an hour.
Following your enterclysis, resume your regular diet. Your stools may be light colored or chalky; this is normal. Drink plenty of fluids (if you are not on a fluid restriction) to help move the barium through your system, otherwise you may become constipated. If you have not had a bowel movement in three days, contact your doctor. A laxative may be recommended.
After your exam is read by a radiologist, your doctor will receive a report of the findings and will discuss them with you.
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
