Kidney Biopsy

A kidney or renal biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of kidney tissue is removed through a needle placed into your kidney. A renal biopsy is done to help determine the cause of abnormal blood or urine tests or to diagnose kidney abnormalities.

Before the procedure, your physician will give you instructions on when to stop taking Coumadin, aspirin or other blood thinners. Please do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to the biopsy. You will be asked to arrive at the hospital a few hours prior to your appointed biopsy time. You will be admitted to a Medical unit where a nurse will ask you questions about your health history. You will have blood tests to determine whether you have any bleeding problems. (These tests may have been done at your doctor’s office several days before the biopsy.) An IV may be started.

During the biopsy, the doctor will use ultrasound or CT pictures for guidance when selecting the best site for the biopsy. Your physician will mark the best spot for the biopsy. A local anesthetic (numbing medication) will be injected into the area using a small needle. You may feel a burning or stinging sensation as the medication is injected. The biopsy needle is then placed while you are given breathing instructions. To assure enough tissue has been obtained, the biopsy needle may need to be passed several times.

After the procedure, you will return to your hospital room where you will rest and be monitored the rest of the day and overnight. You will need to lie flat on your back for the first several hours post biopsy. Your pulse and blood pressure will be taken, along with urine and additional blood samples. Your nurses will instruct you in activity restrictions and general care before you return home.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
