Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter or PICC Line
A PICC line is a central venous catheter used to administer IV medications, blood products, or fluids. A PICC line may also be used for blood draws. PICC lines can stay in for months if needed. They are useful for long term IV therapy such as chemotherapy or antibiotics. PICC’s are frequently used for short term IV therapy when venous access is difficult.
You will be asked to sign consent before the procedure.
A PICC line is placed in a vein in the upper arm. During the procedure you will lay on an x-ray table with your arm extended out to the side. Ultrasound guidance or a contrast injection will locate the vein. The skin is numbed and the catheter is placed. It will be taped to the skin to secure it in place.
Watch for signs of infection at the insertion site such as redness, swelling, drainage or a fever. Arm circumference will be measured to monitor for swelling in the arm. You may shower with a PICC in place but cover it with clear plastic wrap. Instructions for post care will be provided.
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
