Prostate Biopsy

A prostate biopsy is a procedure in which a needle is used to obtain samples of prostate tissue. The biopsy is used to check if there are any abnormalities of the prostate gland.

Before the biopsy, certain medications may increase your risk of bleeding and may need to be held prior to your procedure. You may resume these medications the day after your procedure unless otherwise instructed. Please do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to the procedure. You must use a disposable (Fleets) enema 2-4 hours prior to your biopsy. Your physician may also give you a dose of antibiotic to be taken prior to the biopsy.

During the procedure, a radiologist will use an ultrasound transducer inserted into your rectum to examine your prostate gland. A thin needle is then passed through a guide on the transducer and small samples of the prostate are taken. These samples are sent to the laboratory where they will be examined. You may be given pain medication and sedation through your IV during the biopsy. Length of the exam is 30-45 minutes.

After the biopsy, expect to rest the remainder of the day. The lab will send your biopsy results to your physician.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
