Imaging Services - Patient Instructions
Prostate Biopsy
A prostate biopsy is a procedure in which a needle is used to obtain samples of prostate tissue. A prostate biopsy is done to check if there are any abnormalities of the prostate gland.
Some medications may increase the risk of bleeding after your procedure. Please check with your doctor about possibly holding medications such as aspirin, Coumadin (warfarin), Ticlid, Pletal, Aggrenox, Plavix and NSAIDs, such as naproxen and ibuprofen, before your procedure. Please hold these medications as directed. You may resume your medications the day after your procedure.
Please do not eat or drink anything six hours prior to the procedure. You must take a disposable (Fleets) enema 2-4 hours prior to your biopsy. You can buy the enema at your local pharmacy. Follow the instructions on the package. Your physician may also give you a dose of antibiotic to be taken prior to the biopsy. You will be instructed to arrive at the Outpatient Services department at a specified time. There, a nurse will ask you questions, and you may need certain blood tests done before the needle biopsy to see whether you have any bleeding problems. An IV may be started to give you some sedation during the test.
During the procedure, a radiologist will use an ultrasound transducer inserted into your rectum to examine your prostate gland. A thin needle is then passed through a guide on the transducer and small samples of the prostate are taken out through the needle. Several samples are taken. These samples are sent to the laboratory where they will be examined. You may feel some discomfort during the procedure. You may be given pain medication and sedation through your IV during the biopsy. Length of the exam is 30-45 minutes.
After the biopsy, expect to rest and be monitored for 2-3 hours. The lab will send your biopsy results to your physician. Nurses will instruct you in activity restrictions and general care before you return home.
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
