Ultrasound Amniocentesis

An ultrasound amniocentesis is a procedure in which high frequency sound waves are used to locate the position of your fetus, and a sample of the fluid surrounding the fetus (amniotic fluid) is obtained.

An ultrasound amniocentesis is performed to withdraw amniotic fluid from the uterus to determine maturity of the fetus’ lungs.

Before the amniocentesis, you may eat normally. No special preparation is required.

During the procedure, you will be positioned comfortably on your back. Your amniocentesis will be performed by your obstetrician using ultrasound guidance. Pictures of your baby will appear on a video screen and several images and measurements will be recorded. Your lower abdomen will be cleaned with an antiseptic. Using the ultrasound picture as a guide, your doctor will select the safest position to insert a thin needle through your abdomen and into the uterus without hurting your fetus or placenta. Approximately 2 tablespoons of amniotic fluid is withdrawn in a syringe attached to the needle and sent to the lab for testing. Length of the procedure is about 30 minutes.

After the ultrasound amniocentesis, you may resume your normal activities unless otherwise directed by your doctor. The lab will send the results to your physician.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
