Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a procedure in which small particles are injected into vessels feeding the fibroid tumors. This will cut off their blood supply, thus causing fibroids to shrink in size.

Before the procedure, please do not eat after midnight. You may take medications with a sip of water. If you have an allergy to x-ray dye, please notify your physician as soon as possible.

During the procedure, an area of your groin will be shaved and cleaned.  A radiologist will numb the site and a very small tube called a catheter will be inserted into the vessel. While viewing the x-ray picture on a monitor, a catheter will be inserted and guided to the uterine artery. Once vessels feeding the fibroid tumor(s) are located, the radiologist will inject particles to block their blood supply. During the procedure you will receive sedation and pain medications.

After the procedure you will be transferred to the Women's Center on the third floor. It is normal to stay at least one night after this procedure. Medications will be given to help decrease the normal cramping and pain that will occur post-procedure. Our radiologist will see you through your hospital stay.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
