Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Purpose of the Procedure
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure performed by an Interventional Radiologist in Imaging Services. Small particles are injected into vessels feeding the fibroid tumors. This will cut off their blood supply, thus causing the fibroids to shrink in size.

Before the Procedure
Please do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your procedure.

During the Procedure
The Radiologist will numb the site and a very small tube called a catheter will be inserted into the vessel. While viewing the x-ray picture on a TV monitor, a catheter will be inserted and guided to the uterine artery. Once the vessels feeding the fibroid tumor(s) are located, the radiologist will inject particles to block their blood supply. During the procedure you will receive IV sedation and pain medications.

After the Procedure
Once the procedure is completed you will be transferred to the Women’s Center on third floor. It is normal to stay at least one night after this procedure. Medications will be given to help decrease the normal cramping and pain that occur post-procedure. Our Interventional Radiologist will see you through your hospital stay.

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
