Video Swallow Evaluation with Speech Therapist
A video swallow evaluation is an examination performed in the imaging department with a radiologist and speech therapist present. There is no special preparation prior to the test. The patient may be transported to the procedure in a special chair. The patient swallows a variety of food and liquid mixed with barium as the radiologist takes video x-rays of the mouth and throat (assessing the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing). These images show how food passes from the mouth through the throat and into the esophagus. The amount and consistency of barium trials will be determined by the speech therapist.
This test is used to diagnose a swallowing disorder and determine management and treatment strategies to improve swallowing function and safety. A video swallow evaluation may be considered medically necessary to diagnose patients with suspected aspiration (when foreign matter enters the lungs).
The speech therapist will review the results with the patient after the evaluation.
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
