Imaging Services - Patient Instructions
Cystogram or Voiding Cystogram (VCUG)
A cystogram is an x-ray of the bladder, ureters and urethra. It is used to determine whether the bladder empties completely when you urinate. It also is used to diagnose reflux (in which urine backs up to the kidneys instead of flowing out through the urethra). A cystogram may detect abnormalities such as stones, tumors, or damage due to injury.
Before the Exam
We will be using radiation for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.
During the Exam
During the exam a catheter will be placed in your bladder. Your bladder will then be filled with contrast material. After your bladder is full, x-rays are taken. If you are having a voiding cystogram x-rays will be taken as you empty your bladder. The exam takes about 45 minutes to complete.
After the Exam
Your doctor will be contacted with the results of your test and will discuss the results with you.
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. To help ensure quality and safety, we ask that you do not bring young children with you to your appointments, as children are not allowed to accompany you during Imaging procedures. Staff is unable to monitor your child in your absence.
