| Pediatric Rehabilitation - Feeding Program
What is it?
A feeding evaluation may be needed if mealtime is becoming frustrating or if your child has difficulty gaining weight, drinking from a bottle, or eating solid foods. It may also be necessary if your child has frequent coughing and gagging episodes or if your child is a picky eater. Speech therapists and occupational therapists work together to find the cause of your child’s difficulties and plan treatment strategies for your family.
Treatments
- Individual or team evaluations
- Videofluoroscopic swallowing studies -- a moving X-ray while your child eats and drinks
- Oral motor therapy to target tongue and/or jaw weakness or incoordination
- Oral sensory therapy to target awareness of where food is in the mouth as well as to increase tolerance to a wide variety of flavors and textures
Benefits
- A comprehensive approach to feeding with therapists trained in the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Program.
- Referral and team collaboration with pediatric dietitians.
- Contact with your child’s physician regarding their progress.
- A team approach with family and caregivers that increases the child’s success.
