Pediatric Rehabilitation - Torticollis and Plagiocephaly Program

St. Cloud Hospital’s Pediatric Rehabilitation team works as part of the Cleft & Craniofacial Center – an affiliate of the CentraCare Health System to treat children with torticollis, plagiocephaly and other cranial asymmetries. We believe that each child is unique and deserves specialized and comprehensive care.

What is torticollis?
Torticollis literally means "twisted neck." While there are many causes of torticollis, the most common is a muscular condition, in which there is tightness and/or weakness in the muscles of the neck, causing a child to hold their head in a tilted or twisted position.

What is plagiocephaly?
Plagiocephaly ("flattened head syndrome") is used to describe an abnormal head shape where the back of the head is flattened on one side. This will often lead to a forward shift of the ear and face on that side as well.

Other Cranial Asymmetries
Brachiocephaly is used to describe a head shape that is disproportionately wide, while scaphocephaly describes a head shape that is disproportionately long or narrow.

The incidence of these conditions has increased significantly during the past ten years as children spend more time on their backs. The key to successful treatment is early intervention.
