Stroke Quality Measures
Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator (IV tPA) usage rate
Measure Definition: Percentage of ischemic stroke patients that receive Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA).
Rationale: tPA is the only FDA approved medication that can be used in acute ischemic stroke patients to reduce or eliminate disability.
Outcomes: This graph compares the IV tPA usage rate for St. Cloud Hospital patients to national statistics from the Outcome Science Stroke Database. The graph indicates that St. Cloud Hospital administers IV tPA at a comparable rate to hospitals nationwide.
Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen activator (IV tPA) complication rate
Measure Definition: Percentage of acute ischemic stroke patients that received IV tPA and developed brain hemorrhage post-treatment.
Rationale: Unfortunately, one of the complications from IV tPA is brain hemorrhaging. Six out of 100 patients treated with IV tPA may have a hemorrhage post-treatment. Carefully screening patients for tPA eligibility reduces this risk.
Outcomes: This graph compares the IV tPA complication rates for St. Cloud Hospital patients to national statistics from the Outcome Science Stroke Database. The graph indicates that St. Cloud Hospital’s IV tPA complication rate is comparable to hospitals nationwide.

Stroke Composite Score
Measure Definition: Percentage of patients who met the inclusion criteria for the eight stroke measures and the measures were met.
Rationale: Eight stroke measures have been endorsed by the Joint Commission as an indicator for providing quality stroke care. When a patient meets the inclusion criteria for any one of the eight quality measures and that measure is met, this indicates that the patient has received quality stroke care. For example, if the patient met the inclusion criteria for receiving Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis and the patient was given medication, then the patient received quality care according to that indicator.
Outcomes: This graph compares the stroke composite score for St. Cloud Hospital patients to national score from the Outcomes Science Stroke Database. The graph indicates that St. Cloud Hospital’s quality of care is comparable to hospitals nationwide.
