da Vinci Patient Story - Nancy

Since retirement, Nancy Laumeyer, 67, and her husband, James, love to take their antique cars on the back roads of Minnesota to explore small towns, meet interesting people and find collectables.

“Our road trips are the best thing we ever got into,” said Nancy. “You wouldn’t believe what you find in back road barns, sheds and towns.”

In 2011, Nancy’s best discovery was an ad for Anna McNanley, MD, Adult & Pediatric Urology.

For five years, Nancy had lived with a prolapsed uterus, where the uterus collapses into the vaginal canal. It can be caused by aging, weight, multiple vaginal childbirths or conditions that lead to increased pressure on the abdomen (excessive coughing and straining).  “I made an appointment with Dr. McNanley and she knew right away how to take care of me,” said Nancy.

Dr. McNanley suggested Nancy have surgery with the da Vinci robot at St. Cloud Hospital.  The surgery would remove her uterus and insert a soft synthetic mesh to support her pelvic organs.
“Dr. McNanley told me that a da Vinci surgery could result in a lower risk of infection and faster recovery,” said Nancy. “She explained everything so well, I thought I’d try it.” Before surgery, Nancy admits to being nervous, but knew she needed a simple, long-term solution for her prolapsed uterus while she was still young.

Nancy underwent surgery at St. Cloud Hospital in March 2011. She said her care was very good, everyone was pleasant and she highly recommends Dr. McNanley. She stayed only one night at the hospital. Back at home, Nancy said her abdomen was sore, but she never was in any pain.

Nancy is now recovered and looks forward to other adventures on antique car runs. “You never know the places you’ll go, the things you’ll see and the people you’ll meet,” said Nancy.
