Healthy Living Turnaround - June 2014
Summer has arrived and is in full swing. With the warm days come fun filled weekends with plenty of cookouts and family celebrations. Grandma’s potato salad, beer brats, chips, and s’mores. Sounds great right? Well, this menu would be an average person's full intake of calories for the day. How can we enjoy this well-deserved time of the year without blowing our healthy lifestyle eating? One key tip…focus on the lean protein and fresh fruits and veggies.
I like to keep plenty of fresh chicken breasts, lean cuts of beef and my go-to…turkey burgers in the freezer. Having them on hand is helpful when you need something to cook ASAP. When we don’t have these things available we don’t want to take time out and go to the store to get them. It is at times like these that we make bad choices and eat whatever we can make the quickest. When I do grill for dinner, I like to grill a few extra chicken breasts or turkey burgers so that I have some for leftovers the next few days. I will make salads with the chicken breast or wraps.
When I know that I am going to a party or grill out, I bring extra protein to share like marinated chicken breasts or my jalapeno turkey burgers. This way I know that I will have a good healthy lean protein for myself. Stay away from the chips and filler foods. If you want to snack try guacamole and fresh veggies. For dessert bring the sweetest fresh fruit you can find. I like to bring pineapple, watermelon or bing cherries. Keep yourself hydrated well with water. The more water you take in, the less hungry you will feel. Many times we will feel as if we are hungry but really we are thirsty and need water, this is how we can over eat too. We fill our stomach when we really just need to hydrate our body better. I like to try and drink 1 to 1.5 gallons of water each day.
