Survivorship

Coborn Cancer Center offers a new dimension of care that is designed to provide you with access to information and services that can enhance your quality of life.

Your life is changed by cancer, and what defines you will also change. As you move through therapy or transition back to work and home, we will help you find the spiritual, psychological, social and physical resource connections you need. We are committed to offering you access to those resources that can effectively enhance your life throughout the cancer experience.

Care Coordinators

One aspect of our holistic approach to care is three disease-specific registered nurse care coordinators. Care coordinators assist patients with breast, lung and gastrointestinal cancers, and their families, through their cancer journey by providing assistance with appointments, procedures and treatment options.

As the link between the patient, their doctors and the rest of the care team, they ensure that patients have the education, support and resources needed to make informed choices.

Enhancement Program

Cancer therapies can have many effects on cancer patients with many experiencing a devastating hair loss. Fortunately, through the support of the CentraCare Health Foundation, we are able to provide individuals with the unique support they need.

The Enhancement Program provides cancer patients with a one-on-one consultation with a licensed cosmetologist. In the consultation, a patient can have an individualized fitting of a wig, sleeping hat, Cathy Cap, turban and an outdoor hat. Each patient can choose from over 500 wigs, and the cosmetologist teaches how to care for and maintain the wig. If needed, the wig is also cut and styled. This program is offered at no cost to patients.

The Enhancement Program is located in the Breast Center at CentraCare Health Plaza. If you are receiving care through CentraCare Health and are interested in a consultation, please call 320-229-4900 to schedule an appointment.

Integrative Therapies

Massage therapy is referred to as a complementary therapy — not alternative therapy — because it is evidence-based. It may help you manage the short and long term side effects of treatment and can give you a sense of comfort. Comfort-oriented massage or touch can be helpful to people with cancer regardless of the severity of their condition.

Massage therapy offers benefits to cancer patients at nearly every stage of treatment and recovery. Among other benefits, massage may help:

  • Decrease symptoms related to chemotherapy and radiation such as fatigue, nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite
  • Increase the effectiveness of other treatments such as pain medication, physical therapy or a medical procedure
  • Increase circulation
  • Provide pain relief
  • Decrease anxiety and depression
  • Increase range of motion
  • Relieve muscle soreness
  • Decrease swelling

Managing Physical Side Effects

With advances in cancer treatment and survival, today’s cancer patient may face secondary side-effects. Staff with specialized training can effectively treat a variety of health conditions.

  • Lymphedema
  • Limited motion
  • Balance or gait problems
  • Neuropathy
  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Cognitive and memory challenges
  • Swallowing difficulty
  • Weakness/de-conditioning
  • Urinary incontinence

Survivorship Visits

Your Cancer Survivorship Visit will provide you with vital information to help you successfully transition from active treatment to survivorship. Cancer survivors often face physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges as a result of their diagnosis and treatment.  We strive to enhance health and quality of life before, during and after cancer treatment.

Cancer Survivorship Visits include discussion about:

  • Your survivorship plan of care
  • Follow up care information based on your cancer stage, pathology and treatments received
  • Managing possible physical, emotional, sexual and social effects
  • Referrals for possible services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral health care, or palliative care
  • Education on concerning signs and symptoms and when to speak up
  • Strategies to stay healthy
  • Support services available

Visual & Music Therapy

Research has shown that your physical health is greatly influenced by your emotional state of mind. In an effort to affect our patients' emotional state of mind, we have strategically placed beautiful lighted imagery throughout the radiation department, and we offer our patients the option of listening to their choice of music during their treatments.

It is our hope that by incorporating both music and visual therapy into our patients' treatment regimen, we can enhance the body’s physical healing ability to allow for a better radiation therapy experience and ultimately a better outcome for our patients.

Resource Library

Located within the Coborn Cancer Center, the library is a place for patients and families to find the most up-to-date cancer information they need as they move through therapy and then transition back to their lives after treatment. Our goal is to keep cancer survivors and the community connected to the most current information related to cancer and its treatment as well as issues related to survivorship.

Our library computers feature “Oncology Interactive,” a computer program developed by more than 300 oncology professionals. The award-winning Oncology Interactive™ Education Series (OIES™) helps patients gain control through comprehensive cancer education. Internet connections to the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute and many other key cancer resources are also available.
