GoLytely/NuLytely/CoLyte (colonoscopy prep)

PLEASE READ ENTIRE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING YOUR PREP

  • If you are diabetic, consult your doctor for diet and medication instructions.
  • If you take medication to thin your blood and have not already discussed this with our office, please call (320) 229-4974.
  • If you take aspirin, you may continue to do so.
  • If you are or may be pregnant, please discuss the risks and benefits of this procedure with your doctor.
  • Check with your insurance carrier about coverage (phone number on the back of your insurance card).
  • You will not be able to return to work the day of your procedure.
  • You must arrange for a ride for the day of your exam. If you fail to arrange transportation with a responsible adult, your procedure may be canceled and rescheduled.
  • If you must cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call (320) 229-4933 as soon as possible. You may also call (800) 835-6652, ext. 74933, Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Dress comfortably, short sleeves are allowed under your patient gown. Please leave your valuables at home. If you wear glasses bring your glass case with you.

To ensure a successful exam, please follow all instructions carefully. Failure to accurately and completely prepare for your exam may result in the need for an additional procedure and both procedures will be billed to your insurance.

Before your exam:

  • You will receive two phone calls (one from a nurse and one from registration) 1 to 2 days prior to your scheduled procedure. If you have questions, you can call (320) 229-4974. Information will be collected to pre-admit you. This will assist us in giving you the best care possible.
  • Purchase the following over‐the‐counter supplies at your local pharmacy:
         Bisacodyl/Dulcolax 5mg. tablets, 4 ORAL tablets
         Fill your prescription for GoLytely/NuLytely/CoLyte
         Crystal Light packet (no red or purple) **Optional—mix into prep
            solution to improve the taste.
  • 5 days before your exam: stop taking medications containing iron; this includes iron supplements and multivitamins with iron.
  • 3 days before your exam: stop eating all high fiber foods and begin a low fiber diet. A low fiber diet makes the cleanout more effective. Examples of a low fiber diet include: white bread, white rice, pasta, potato without skin, plain crackers, fish, any cooked meat, eggs, peanut butter without nuts, clear beverages (apple juice, white grape juice, Sprite, sparkling water, Gatorade), any cooked vegetables, milk, yogurt, cheese and jelly. Avoid raw fruits or vegetables, whole wheat or high fiber foods, seeds, nuts, popcorn, Metamucil, Fibercon, bran or any bulking agent.
  • 2 days before your exam: continue low fiber diet, drink at least 8 glasses of water during the day, stop eating solid foods at 11:45 p.m.
  • 1 day before your exam: start a clear liquid diet — no solid foods. Examples of a clear liquid diet: water (drink at least 8 glasses of water during the day), coffee or tea (do not add milk or creamer), clear broth or bouillon, Gatorade or Pedialyte (no red or purple), carbonated and non‐carbonated soft drinks (no red or purple), strained fruit juices without pulp (orange, apple, white grape, white cranberry), Jell-O, popsicles, hard candy, (no red or purple).

      Avoid red or purple liquids, alcohol and dairy products.

Continue 1 day before exam: if your exam is before 11 a.m.

  • You will need to be on a clear liquid diet the entire day.
  • In the morning, mix the GoLytely/NuLytely/CoLyte powder with water until completely dissolved and refrigerate it. *Optional (Add Crystal Light at any time.)
  • At 9 a.m. take the 4 oral tablets of Biscodyl/Dulcolax.
  • At 3 p.m. start drinking the prep solution. Some people prefer to drink the solution at room temperature because it can make you feel chilled. Take it out of the refrigerator 1‐2 hours prior to starting to drink it if you wish.
  • Set a timer for every 15 minutes. Drink an 8-ounce glass of solution to help flush your colon. If you feel nauseated, bloated, have cramping or vomit, rinse your mouth with water, take a 15 to 30 minute break and then continue until the prep solution is gone.
  • It will take about 4-6 hours to drink the solution.
  • You must finish all of the prep solution.
  • Continue to drink clear liquids after you finish the prep solution.

Day of Procedure

  • You may have clear liquids up to 3 hours before your procedure.
  • Allow extra time to travel to your procedure, you may need to stop and use a restroom along the way.

Continue 1 day before exam: if your exam is after 11 a.m.

  • You will need to be on a clear liquid diet the entire day.
  • In the morning, mix the GoLytely/NuLytely/CoLyte powder with water until completely dissolved and refrigerate it. *Optional (Add Crystal Light at any time.)
  • At 9 a.m. take the 4 oral tablets of Biscodyl/Dulcolax.
  • At 3 p.m. start drinking the prep solution. Some people prefer to drink the solution at room temperature because it can make you feel chilled. Take it out of the refrigerator 1‐2 hours prior to starting to drink it if you wish.
  • You will be drinking only half of the solution today.
  • Set a timer for every 15 minutes. Drink an 8-ounce glass of solution to help flush your colon. If you feel nauseated, bloated, have cramping or vomit, rinse your mouth with water, take a 15 to 30 minute break and then continue until the first half of the prep solution is gone.
  • It should take about 2-3 hours to drink half of the prep solution.
  • Put the remainder of the prep solution back in the refrigerator to complete taking on the morning of your procedure.

Day of Procedure

  • Start drinking the last half of your prep solution at 6 a.m.
  • Drink an 8‐ounce glass every 15 minutes until prep solution is gone. If you feel nauseated, bloated, have cramping or vomit, rinse your mouth with water, take a 15 to 30 minute break and then continue until the prep solution is gone.
  • It will take about 2-3 hours to finish the solution.
  • You will need to finish this at least 3 hours before your scheduled procedure time.
  • You may have clear liquids up to 3 hours before your procedure.
  • Allow extra time to travel to your procedure, you may need to stop and use a restroom along the way.

Colon Cleansing Tips

  • Stay near a toilet! You will have diarrhea.
  • If you feel nauseated, bloated, have cramping or vomit, rinse your mouth with water, take a 15 to 30 minute break and then continue until the prep solution is gone. (amount dependant on the time of your procedure.)
  • You will be uncomfortable until stool is flushed from your colon, you may feel chilled.
  • You may suck on hard candies, (no red or purple)
  • Alcohol‐free baby wipes or Vaseline may help ease skin irritation.
  • Over‐the‐counter hydrocortisone creams, hemorrhoid treatments or Tucks may be used if desired.

Checklist

  • You are ready for your exam, if you followed instructions and your stool is all clear or yellow liquid (nothing solid).
  • Unless you were told otherwise, we recommend holding your morning medications until after your procedure.
  • Bring a list of your current medications and allergies to your appointment if you have not talked with the pre-admission nurse.
