Structural Heart Disease Program

For more information about our Valve Clinic, call 320-293-0750 or email us.

Structural heart disease means you have abnormalities in your heart muscles, valves or major blood vessels. These defects can affect heart function and blood flow. Structural heart disease can be present at birth or develop later in life because of injury, infection or aging.

What procedures does CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center offer for structural heart disease?

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

We provide TAVR to patients with symptoms of severe narrowing of the aortic valve who are not candidates for traditional open chest surgery or are high risk operable candidates. TAVR is performed on a beating heart and does not require cardio-pulmonary bypass. A collapsible artificial valve is delivered by a tube (catheter) through the patient’s groin and up the femoral artery toward the heart, where it eventually reaches the aortic valve. The artificial valve is expanded inside the native valve by inflating a balloon.

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Closure

An ASD is a hole in the wall between the top two chambers of the heart. We may use medicine to reduce signs and symptoms. If needed, we can close the hole with a procedure in our cath lab. We insert a tube into a blood vessel in the groin and guide it to the heart. Then we send a mesh patch through the tube to plug the hole. Over time heart tissue will grow around the mesh and permanently seal the hole. Another method of closing the hole is surgery.

Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure

PFO is a flap-like hole that creates a tunnel between the top two chambers of the heart. If needed, we can plug the hole with device during a procedure in our cath lab. In this procedure, we place the device on the end of a tube. The doctor inserts the tube into a vein in the groin and guides the device into place to plug the hole. Another method of closing the hole is surgery.

Atrial Appendage Device Closure

Patients with abnormal heart rhythms are at higher risk for stroke. For those who cannot use blood thinning medicine, we offer left atrial appendage device closure. This minimally invasive procedure is done in our cath lab.
