Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The St. Cloud Hospital Respiratory Care department offers programs designed for those who have chronic lung conditions such as bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, bronchiectasis and other lung conditions.

These programs can help you:

  • Live more comfortably and independently
  • Improve your daily living
  • Control your illness
  • Avoid hospital admission

Respiratory therapists and other health care workers tailor education to meet your needs and teach you how to live better with your lung condition.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

This two-hour class meets twice a week working toward individual goals. Classes are small to allow for one-on-one time with the instructor and staff. A family member or friend can join you for the education portion of the class.

This program covers:

  • Lung function and treatment of your condition
  • Strategies for managing shortness of breath
  • Medications (side effects and self-care)
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Ways to manage your diet
  • Symptom assessment and knowing when to seek medical treatment
  • Monitored and supervised exercise, tailored to your needs
  • Strategies to quit smoking

To join:

  • Talk to the pulmonary rehab specialists by calling 320-251-2700, ext. 54345.
  • Talk to your provider.
  • Call your insurance company with benefit questions. Most insurance plans cover the cost of pulmonary rehabilitation.

Medical Fitness Program

Participating in an exercise program is important. It helps you develop a lifelong pattern of regular exercise and strengthens the skills you learned in the Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. You can continue these skills at home, in your community or with the Medical Fitness Program at St Cloud Hospital.

This program, in collaboration with the CentraCare Heart and Vascular Center, includes:

  • Exercising on your own to make your heart and lungs stronger
  • Staff who will assess pre- and post-blood pressure measurements
  • Individual muscle strengthening programs available upon request
