When Kathy Hinkemeyer at age 48 needed surgery on her right knee, she looked to orthopedic surgeon Steven Mulawka, MD, and St. Cloud Hospital. Fellowship-trained surgeons, nationally certified nurses, and a dedicated unit with rehabilitation staff have made St. Cloud Hospital a national leader in orthopedic care. After years of stabbing pain, swelling and fluid in her knee, following total knee replacement surgery Kathy awoke to a leg that could straighten and nearly no discomfort. Now, the only reminder is a three-inch scar. Kathy, who loves the outdoors, has regained her active lifestyle in golf, snorkeling, boating and snowmobiling. “My only regret was waiting a year too long before having surgery,” Kathy said. She now is looking forward to having her left knee replaced, especially since St. Cloud Hospital uses the best and most up-to-date technology, including computer assisted navigation. |

Patient satisfaction in the St. Cloud Hospital Bone & Joint Center consistently ranks in the top 10 percent nationally
Upon waking from having a total knee replacement in November of 2010, Rosie Thell, then age 47, had a smile on her face. “The deep aching pain of many years was gone,” Rosie said. Rosie, a dairy farmer from Freeport, thought that the chronic pain was something she just had to live with. After other methods failed to help ease the pain, Rosie turned to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Schaap. Not only is the nagging pain gone in her left knee, she now is able to spend time outdoors with her two teenage boys.
Rosie credits the great care of her surgeon, nurses and therapists at St. Cloud Hospital Bone & Joint Center for getting her back on her feet doing the things she loves — hunting and fishing. |

Barefoot waterskiier “does it all” after joint replacement

I have always viewed pain as a challenge to conquer. After years of losing range of motion in my hips and knee and experiencing unmanageable pain, I had to accept what the doctors were telling me…I had bad hips and a worn out knee. I was afraid of the restrictions artificial joints might impose on me. Dr. Joe Nessler and his staff worked wonders replacing my hips and knee. To this day, I still find it hard to believe I walked into the hospital in the morning and then walked out the same afternoon with a new replacement hip and have regained full range of motion. We are blessed with today’s medical technology. As an avid barefoot waterskiier — not only was I back on the water barefoot skiing 4 weeks after surgery, but playing tennis and living life the only way I know how — actively. -- Cliff Teigen, patient

Being an obstetrician and gynecologist, Brett Pinkerton of Sartell, spends her days helping others. But after a bilateral hip replacement to replace worn out hips, she gained insight for others with physical ailments.
After surgery she was thrilled to be pain-free other than the discomfort from the incision. Within a month she was swimming and more than six months later had recovered almost 100 percent. “Not having the chronic ache in my hip joint is such a gift!” Dr. Pinkerton said. |

Top grade awarded after knee replacement surgery
Paul Conrad, assistant principal at Albany junior and senior high school, gives St. Cloud Hospital Bone & Joint Center an “A” plus for the outstanding job they did with his follow up care after knee replacement surgery.
A total sports enthusiast, Paul, at age 46 now was paying the price of playing multiple sports during high school and college. It was while fielding a ball during a college baseball game, that he planted his foot wrong, tearing the ACL in his left knee. After years of pain and temporary fixes, Paul sought out the help and expertise of orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mulawka, St. Cloud Orthopedics.
Prior to surgery Paul said he felt like a 90-year-old man when walking down the hallway at Albany Junior and Senior High. Stairs made him feel even older.
Now after having his left knee joint replaced in April of 2011 he feels like a new person.
“Dr. Mulawka is top-notch. He was informative and educated me on what I could expect before and after surgery,” Paul said. “Surgery and recovery went extremely well. There is no more pain and I can be active again.”
