High Dose Rate Radiation Therapy (HDR)
A treatment option, known as High Dose Rate Radiation Therapy (HDR), is available for some cancer patients. A machine called a high dose rate remote afterloader allows radiation oncologists to complete this type of brachytherpy in about 10 to 20 minutes. Powerful radioactive sources travel through small tubes called catheters to the tumor inside the body for the amount of time prescribed by your radiation oncologist. You may be able to go home shortly after the procedure. Depending on the area treated, you may receive several treatments over a number of days or weeks, however, this treatment is generally much shorter than external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), providing equal or better results and often less side effects.
