Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Image Guided Radiation Therapy is an advanced technology that allows radiation oncologists to provide extremely accurate, highly customized radiation treatments. IGRT combines daily pre-treatment imaging with accurate immobilization and highly conformal treatment. Treatment delivery is precise within millimeters, and the ability to image the tumor in three dimensions on a daily basis allows the physician to adapt the therapy as the tumor shape changes with treatment.
This system can treat nearly any form of cancer by combining imaging and radiation therapy to provide “real-time” pictures of the patient’s tumor. This gives the radiation oncologist the ability to treat the tumor with greater precision while sparing the healthy tissue and organs surrounding the tumor.
