Infusion Therapy
Infusion therapy involves introducing a fluid or medication into a vein to provide treatment that cannot be taken by mouth. Infusion therapy is provided to treat illness or counteract the side effects of treatment.
Coborn Cancer Center offers the following infusion therapy treatments:
IV medications for chronic illnesses such as Crohn’s disease, asthma and diabetes
Pain management
IV hydration and electrolyte replacement
Blood products such as platelets, red cells or plasma
Chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer and some non-cancer conditions
IV antibiotics for treatment of infections
Biotherapy to stimulate the immune system
Monoclonal antibodies
Biologic response modifiers
Interferon/Interleukin
Hematopoetic growth factors
Enzyme replacement therapy
IV antiemetics for nausea and vomiting
IV immune globulin to boost the body’s natural defense system against infections
IV bisphosphonates (i.e. Zometa, Pamidronate) to treat osteoporosis as well as help protect bones against effects of cancer treatment
IV iron replacement therapy for iron deficient anemias
IV methoprednisolone for MS exacerbation
Subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
Other infusion therapy services include:
Care of long-term central lines, including flushing, cap changes, site dressing change sand repairs as needed. This includes, but not limited to, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and implanted ports.
Therapeutic phlebotomy, which involves withdrawing a prescribed amount of blood to improve the symptoms of a blood disorder.
