Cancer Screenings
Colon cancer screening:
Free colon cancer screenings were offered in March 2009 to nearly 500 individuals in Central Minnesota thanks to the efforts of a local colon cancer patient, the Minnesota Cancer Alliance and CentraCare Health System. The screenings resulted in 32 positive findings for blood in participants’ stools with 12 participants receiving colonoscopies. Three of the 32 participants who consulted their physicians and underwent further testing were found to have adenomas, a type of polyp that, if left untreated, potentially could result in cancer. One participant was diagnosed with an early stage rectal cancer and another with esophageal cancer. Colon cancer is the most preventable cancer as it has the highest number of modifiable risk factors. When colorectal cancer is found early and treated, the five-year relative survival rate is 90 percent. Watch for another upcoming free cancer screening.
Melanoma Monday:
As part of Melanoma Monday, 84 people participated in the free skin cancer screenings offered by CentraCare Clinic’s Dermatology Department May 4-5, 2009. The screenings revealed one melanoma, one basal cell carcinoma and many abnormal moles and skin conditions.
