Week 3: Basil

All About It:

basilBasil is originally from Asia and very popular in Italian recipes. But in Minnesota, it may be best to grow basil in containers.

It’s a delicate plant that will die if exposed to freezing temperatures. If you put basil in a pot on your deck or near your front door, it will be easy for you to move it inside if there’s a chance of an overnight frost.

Keeping it near your home also means you can easily run outside and grab a few leaves when making homemade pizza or pasta sauces.

Just be sure to regularly prune your basil so it doesn’t get a chance to flower. If you ever want enough to make homemade pesto, you’ll want your plant focusing all of its energy on growing more leaves.
