988 Ends 'Press 3' for LGBTQIA2S+ Youth, Support Remains
988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline that people can call, text, or chat when they or a loved one is in a mental health crisis.
While the 988 Lifeline remains fully operational, the 'Press 3' option, dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA2S+ youth under age 25, will end as of July 17, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
LGBTQIA2S+ refers to individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, two-spirit, and others across the gender and sexuality spectrum.
Staff in Minnesota's 988 Lifeline centers have specialists trained in LGBTQIA2S+ support. Every person who reaches out will connect with compassionate, culturally responsive professionals ready to help with suicide risk, substance use, mental health concerns, or other emotional challenges.
Why This Matters
A 2024 survey from the Trevor Project found that nearly 40 percent of LGBTQIA2S+ youth had “seriously considered” suicide in the past year. Of those who wanted mental health care, half were unable to access it. Since its launch as a pilot program in 2022, the 'Press 3' option has received roughly 1.3 million calls, demonstrating a critical need for this kind of support.
What's Still Available?
- Everyone can call, text or chat 988
- Press 1 for Veterans
- Press 2 for Spanish speakers
- Trevor Project services (formerly 'Press 3') can still be reached directly at 1-866-488-7386
It is important to note that misinformation has circulated online claiming that Canada's lifeline is an option for U.S. residents. This is not true. The Canadian Lifeline is not available in the United States. U.S. residents should continue to use 988.
