1. Prioritize Preventive Care

Regular checkups with your primary care clinician are the foundation of healthy aging. Annual wellness visits allow us to screen for common conditions and take advantage of timely screenings to help identify and manage potential health problems early on. Getting recommended vaccines, such as influenza, shingles, and pneumonia, can prevent common diseases and protect your health. Your doctor may suggest specific screenings or tests based on your personal health profile.

2. Stay Active

Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to support your body as you age. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Walking, swimming, yoga, and strength training are excellent options to keep your muscles strong, your joints flexible, and your heart healthy. Exercise also reduces the risk of falls, a significant concern for older adults.

3. Nourish Your Body

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains fuels your body with the nutrients it needs. Older adults often need more calcium, vitamin D, and protein to maintain bone and muscle health. Talk to your clinician or a dietitian about whether supplements are right for you.

4. Care for Your Mind

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Stay socially connected by spending time with family and friends, volunteering, or participating in local activities. Engaging in hobbies, learning something new, or doing puzzles can help keep your mind sharp.

5. Manage Chronic Conditions

If you have chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease, work closely with your health care team to manage them effectively. Take medications as prescribed, monitor your symptoms, and don’t hesitate to ask questions about your treatment plan.

6. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep patterns may change with age, but most older adults still need seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a bedtime routine, limit caffeine and screen time before bed, and talk to your clinician or a sleep specialist if sleep disorders are taking away from your quality of life.

7. Stay Positive

A positive outlook can have a powerful impact on your health. Practice gratitude, focus on what you can do, and seek support when you need it. Remember, healthy aging isn’t about avoiding challenges but finding ways to adapt and thrive.

Your 60s and beyond can be some of the most rewarding years of your life. By taking small but meaningful steps toward preventive care and embracing a healthy lifestyle, you can continue to enjoy the people and activities that matter most to you.
