Siblings Support Brother After Heart Attacks, Transition to VA

photo of James Mattson with his sisters Elizabeth Andres and Mary Jane BuzzieAs people grow older, friends may come and go, but siblings often remain a constant source of support and protection creating a foundation that lasts a lifetime.

Such is the case for sisters Elizabeth Andres and Mary Jane Buzzie. They recently became guardians over their brother, James Mattson, a 78-year-old Vietnam veteran, from Motley.

James suffered major heart attacks in 2022 and 2024 followed by a stroke and is now experiencing memory loss. After being hospitalized at CentraCare - St. Cloud Hospital, he was transferred to the St. Cloud VA for rehabilitation where he remains today.

The Gorecki Guest House (GGH) is a resource for families and loved ones of individuals receiving medical care at St. Cloud Hospital, VA Medical Center or undergoing tests.

Between March and July 2025, Elizabeth, Mary Jane and James' daughter, Hana, visited James and found great comfort in being able to stay at the GGH. Elizabeth and Mary Jane are coming back in October and plan to stay at the GGH again.

Elizabeth appreciates the care and comfort provided by the atmosphere and staff during stressful periods for family members. "Having the tranquility of a meditation room was so helpful. There is a spirit, faith and connection at the Guest House and I appreciated being surrounded by it."

GGH's affordable cost was appealing to Elizabeth and James' other family members as well. Given that she has flown in from Florida multiple times with more planned trips, the expenses can add up. "Really helps us be able to afford to visit our brother," she notes.

"Everything at the Gorecki House is so well thought-out to accommodate people's needs. It was a profound experience for me and our family," Elizabeth says. "The facilities are incredible and the staff envelopes us when we come into the facility. We are so grateful."
