What I Do

My philosophy of care is to treat every patient with the same time, dedication, and commitment I would invest in a family member. Each patient is unique in their health, lifestyle and emotional factors that must be evaluated carefully as part of their diagnosis and treatment. I recognize that guidelines for treatment are often standardized for the masses. I strive to examine many factors beyond just the immediate injury or condition before suggesting a treatment recommendation. While a “by-the-numbers" approach is faster for many practitioners, it rarely yields optimal results for the patients.

My clinical interests include upper extremity trauma, shoulder (instability, rotator cuff pathology, arthroplasty and arthroscopy) and elbow (ligament injuries, arthroplasty and arthroscopy). My research interests focus on arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques of the shoulder. My clinical practice focuses on the assessment and management of orthopedic conditions involving the shoulder and elbow.

Why I Love My Work

I love my career for a few reasons.

Number 1 is variety. Patients may include children, adults, seniors, and athletes. They come to me from all walks of life — maybe they need to get back to their sport, or to be able to play with their grandchildren, or maybe they just need to be able to work to support their family. I have the privilege of treating their shoulder and elbow injuries to give them the opportunity to once again participate in their daily activities.

Number 2 is the mix of being in the office and the operating room. I love that I get to see patients in the office and develop close relationships with them as well as perform surgery, if necessary. I get to interact with patients from the beginning; I listen carefully to their story, review advanced imaging with them, and collaboratively come up with a treatment plan that will allow them to get back to their life.

Number 3 is innovation and creativity. Orthopedics is an extremely exciting field and there are continual new innovations in the implants used to reconstruct fractures, replace joints, and treat ailments. No surgical case is the same which leads to a creative energy and thought process.

Nonetheless, the greatest part of my job is the joy of seeing a patient transition from a painful and inactive state to a pain-free active individual because of the care they received. Seeing patients return to their regular daily activities after shoulder or elbow reconstruction is incredibly gratifying.

Showed little concern. Told me how busy he was. Really seemed like he did not want to see me there.

Some of what Dr Ivan said went over my head but I appreciated that he showed me on the xray what my shoulder should look like, what was happening and then how the procedure would repair the shoulder

Kind of a harsh personality, at least with me and my getting a second opinion from him about my problem. However, I can work with that because he seems to be very thorough, and is doing due diligence to make an accurate diagnosis [...].

Dr. Ivan was very good. I went to him back in January and he suggested that I do physical therapy on my shoulder. His last words to me back then were-" if you think it will work (PT) it will work, if you think it won't work, it won't. Those were great words to tell me! I followed his advice and the PT did work. I have much better range of motion. Another thing is he asked me if I wanted surgery- he wanted my input on it rather than just telling me that I should or shouldn't- that was very kind of him.
