Prescription for Reading

Question: How do I get my young child interested in reading?

Answer:

Reading out loud every day is one of the best things you can do to help your young child learn.  Even if it is only for a few minutes, reading should be an important part of your child’s day starting when they are a baby.

Reading aloud helps babies learn to speak and understand language, builds curiosity and imagination, and helps them learn to read on their own at an early age.  The reading skills they learn from you help prepare them for school and a lifetime of learning.  And reading is simple to do: just pick up a book and read!

To make reading more fun, you can:

  • Talk about the pictures to add to the story
  • Let your child turn the page and explore the book
  • Run your finger along the words as you read
  • Add fun sound effects or voices
  • Ask and answer questions about the story
  • Let your child pick out new books to read at a local library

CentraCare Health - Monticello Medical Group and CentraCare Clinic - Big Lake recently introduced a wonderful program to our families called Reach Out and Read. The program provides free books to kids at their check ups.  Kids are eligible from birth to age 5, getting a new book that is perfect for their age at each well child visit.  We participate in this because we, as health care providers, believe in the power of books!  If you already read with your child every day—great work, keep it up!  Feel free to ask us about reading at your next visit or share your favorite book.

The more things you will know.

The more you learn,

The more places you’ll go!
