Our Mission

The St. Cloud Hospital Pharmacy Department is proud to offer a robust and rewarding PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Experience. The department is composed of a large, integrated pharmacy staff that is excited to train pharmacy residents to be patient-focused leaders by providing a broad range of clinical experiences within our culture of teamwork. Maintaining our Mission

Paul Huiras, PharmD, BCPSMembers of the St. Cloud Hospital Residency Program believe in the benefits of creating a culture of teamwork. We strive to be true to this mission and have constructed aspects of our residency program to cultivate collaboration within our residency class and preceptor group. Examples of this include our annual day-long residency retreat (with all preceptors and residents) focused on resident and preceptor development sessions and teambuilding exercises. Throughout the year, residents work with the Residency Program Director to create fun pharmacy outings by participating in our Residency Emotional Support Team (REST) committee. We also design our resident capstone projects to allow residents to be co-investigators on each other’s projects. Lastly, our block rotational experiences are designed to allow many preceptors and clinical staff to collaborate to affect resident day-to-day development. We believe the St. Cloud Hospital Residency Program is a challenging, multifaceted and fulfilling residency experience made possible by our team approach to learning and training. Program Purpose and Structure

The PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Our PGY1 Residency Program offers a blend of structure and flexibility to create a well-rounded, engaging clinical experience. Following a 6-week orientation to the department, residents rotate through nine, five-week long block experiences composed of 6 core (required) rotations and 3 resident-selected elective rotations. Residents also complete longitudinal experiences with activities designed to foster the growth of the resident. All resident learning experiences, both rotational and longitudinal, are designed to align with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists four required competency areas: (R1) Patient care, (R2) Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care, (R3) Leadership and Management, and (R4) Teaching, Education and Dissemination of Knowledge.

Block Experiences

Core (Required) Rotational Learning Experiences:

  • Orientation: 6 weeks
  • Medicine I: 5 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 5 weeks
  • Management and Leadership: 5 weeks
  • Critical Care: 5 weeks
  • Infectious Disease: 5 weeks
  • Transitions of Care: 5 weeks

Elective Rotations:

  • Pediatrics and Neonatal Medicine: 5 weeks
  • Oncology: 5 weeks
  • Cardiology: 5 weeks
  • Ambulatory Care: 5 weeks
  • Medicine II: 5 weeks

Longitudinal Experiences

Staffing: Every 3rd weekend and one weekday shift every third week.

Leadership and Service Improvement Activities:

  • Resident research or quality improvement capstone project (presented at Midwest Resident’s Conference)
  • Medication use evaluation (presented at ASHP Midyear)
  • Hospital committee involvement (Antimicrobial Stewardship or Pharmacy and Therapeutics)
  • Present a medication monograph or medication class comparison
  • Chair the resident travel or recruitment committee
  • Participate in the Resident Emotional Support Team (REST) Committee
  • Participate and help coordinate (with the RPD) the annual residency retreat

Educational Activities:

  • Design and present two continuing education lectures to pharmacy staff
  • Present two case conferences and precept one student case
  • Present at least two pharmacy inservices (patient and provider)
  • Present two literature reviews using the POEMs methodology
  • Design and present one preceptor development session (during the resident retreat)
  • Co-precept pharmacy students

Requirements and How to Apply

Candidates for the St. Cloud Hospital pharmacy residency program must be:

  • Graduates of an ACPE- accredited college of pharmacy, AND
  • Eligible for licensure in Minnesota on July 1st, AND
  • U.S. Citizens or carry a U.S. permanent resident visa (a “green card”)

Applicants should complete their electronic residency application using the ASHP PhORCAS centralized application system at www.ashp.org/phorcas by January 3, 2018 at 11:59 CST. Complete applications should include the following:

  • A completed residency application
  • Verified PharmD transcripts
  • Personal statement/Letter of intent
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Three completed standardized reference forms — Please ensure one of these references is from a clinical preceptor
