Young Adult, 18-21 Years

Healthy Minds Support Healthy Bodies

Young adults still need encouragement and guidance from their parents. Take an interest in what they are doing, accept their emotions, and be curious about their thoughts and ideas. Meaningful conversations should include equal doses of listening, discussion, problem solving and suggestions, but should avoid lectures and uninvited advice.

Although young adults are growing more independent, the quality of the parent-child relationship often determines the amount of influence you have. Empathy and understanding are the building blocks of a healthy relationship between parents and their young adult children and help form new boundaries in the relationship. Your young adult will be more likely to seek your guidance and value your opinion and support when they feel heard and respected.
