Team Approach
Your care team may include:
- Cardiologists (heart doctors) – Diagnose and treat high blood pressure
- Nurse practitioners and physician assistants – Help oversee your ongoing care
- Nurses – Monitor your health and answer your questions
- Dietitians – Make personal nutrition plans to lower your blood pressure
- Pharmacists – Help you understand your drugs and possible side effects
What to Expect
Your first visit will last about an hour. We’ll take your blood pressure and review your health history. We may also order tests to find the cause of your high blood pressure, which could be:
- Narrowed kidney arteries
- Narrowing of the aorta, your body’s main artery
- Sleep apnea
- Tumor in your adrenal glands
Follow-up appointments take about 30 minutes. We try to schedule them for the same day as your other heart care appointments. That makes your care more convenient.
Custom Care Plan
Expect a personal care plan based on your lifestyle, age, ethnicity and preferences. It could include:
- Recommendations for exercise or changes to your diet
- Education about your condition
- Medication
- Renal denervation, a procedure that reduces nerve activity in the kidneys to decrease blood pressure
- Clinical trials of new treatment options
I no longer worry that I have a ticking time bomb inside of me all the time.
