Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for PrEP medication?
Anyone who is HIV negative, at least 18 years old and currently in Minnesota.

Do I need insurance?
Yes. If you already have insurance, we will work with your insurance company to cover the costs. If you do not have insurance, visit Justus Health. They have a team of people to help you get insurance for PrEP.

How much does it cost?
For most patients, the cost of video visits, lab tests and medication is covered by insurance. Our team will work with you to make sure you are paying the least amount possible for your medication.

How do I get the PrEP medication?
After your video visit and lab tests are finished, we will mail your medication to you from our specialty pharmacy. Shipping is free and the package will not show what is inside.

If you want to use another pharmacy, tell your provider during your visit. The prescription can be sent to any pharmacy in Minnesota. Not every pharmacy carries PrEP medications.

What lab tests do I need?
Our team will find a lab in your area for testing. Labs will include a blood draw, swabs for STIs, and a urine sample. We will check your kidneys and test for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Hepatitis. If you test positive for HIV, STIs or Hepatitis, we can help. If your condition can be treated with pills, we may be able to send them to you by mail. If the condition requires additional treatments, we will help you get the care you need.

Do I have to be a CentraCare patient?
No. TelePrEP is available to anyone in Minnesota.

Can I go to a clinic for my appointment?
Yes. We have in-person appointments at our St. Cloud, Minnesota clinic.

What medications are available for PrEP?
Right now, there are two medications available for PrEP: Truvada and Descovy. Both medications are approved by the FDA. PrEP medications are 99% effective at preventing HIV.
