Cupping Therapy

You may have heard about the use of cupping therapy by Olympic athletes. But you don’t need to be an athlete to give it a try. Anyone looking to reduce recovery time, stress, pain or muscle tension could benefit from this treatment.

Often cupping is used in conjunction with acupuncture. Both are forms of Chinese medicine and have been practiced for thousands of years.

Cupping Therapy Can

  • Reduce pain
  • Lessen inflammation
  • Improve blood flow and circulation
  • Relax muscles, or loosen knots
  • Detoxify

How Much Does It Cost?

It is $45 per session (30 minutes) or $125 for a three-session package. You usually need two to six sessions to experience its full benefits. Cupping therapy also may be included in your individual acupuncture session.

What Should You Expect?

During your appointment, a licensed acupuncturist or a trained therapist completes a thorough assessment. Based on your primary concern, the therapist will place glass or plastic cups at strategic points. Most commonly, cups are placed on the back, neck and shoulders.

Our therapists use the modern technique of suction-cupping. In this technique, a hand-pump creates a vacuum and the suction draws tissue up into the cup. This action increases blood flow, loosens connective tissue and stimulates healing. The cups typically remain in place for five to 15 minutes.

After your session, you may see circular discolorations that look like “bruising.” These circles are not bruising, but rather cellular waste, toxins and other stagnant material brought to the surface from underlying tissue. Your circulatory system will clear away these discolorations after a few days. However, it may take up to 21 days for them to fully disappear. The discolorations will occur less and less as treatments continue and as stagnant and toxic materials are expelled from the body.
