Hip Care

Hip pain can affect how you move, work and enjoy everyday life. At CentraCare, our orthopedic specialists diagnose and treat a wide range of hip conditions. We take a personalized approach to care, starting with conservative, nonsurgical treatment whenever possible. When surgery is needed, minimally invasive options such as hip arthroscopy may help relieve pain, restore movement and support a safe return to activity.

Conditions We Treat

  • Hip arthritis – Degeneration of the cartilage of the ball and/or socket of the hip joint from wear-and-tear, inflammation and trauma/injury
  • Trochanteric bursitis – Pain on the outside of your hip caused by inflammation of the small, fluid-filled sac on the outside of the hip that helps reduce friction during movement
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) – Happens when the ball and socket pinch or rub together abnormally, causing damage to the hip joint over time
  • Labral tears – Damage to the cartilage ring (labrum) around the hip socket that can cause pain, clicking, locking or instability
  • Fractures – Broken bones around the hip from overuse, falls or other injuries

Nonsurgical Treatments

Lifestyle and Activity Changes

  • Weight management to reduce stress on the hip
  • Activity modification, including low-impact exercise
  • Use of assistive devices, such as a cane
  • Rest and avoiding movements that worsen symptoms

Physical Therapy

  • Strengthening exercises to support the hip
  • Stretching to improve flexibility and range of motion

Medications

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications
  • Prescription medications when needed
  • Topical creams for temporary relief

Injections

  • Cortisone (steroid) injection: Reduces inflammation and pain with a higher dose of medication than you could take by mouth.
  • Other injection options, depending on your condition

Additional Therapies

  • Pain-relief therapies such as TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
  • Supplements, when appropriate
  • Low-dose radiation therapy for osteoarthritis

Surgical Treatments

  • Hip arthroscopy: Minimally invasive – It involves only a few small cuts (incisions), leading to less pain and damage compared to traditional surgery.
  • Total and partial hip replacement

When Should I Consider Joint Replacement?

Make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon to talk about your options if you:

  • Have long-lasting pain in your hip
  • Don’t get enough relief from rehabilitation or joint injections
  • Can’t sleep or do daily tasks because of your symptoms

Advanced Technology Improves Your Outcome

Joint replacement is easier and safer than ever thanks to:

  • Less invasive techniques (including the anterior approach to hip replacement) that use smaller incisions and affect less tissue for a faster recovery
  • Computer navigation systems that use sensors and cameras to show your unique anatomy and guide the surgeon in real time for precise care
  • Robotic technology, available in St. Cloud and Monticello, that uses imaging to create a 3D model of your joint to help your implant fit well and feel natural

Outpatient Surgery

Because of advances in treatment, you may be able to return home less than 24 hours after your procedure at our hospitals in St. Cloud, Willmar, Monticello and Paynesville. That means your care costs less, and you can spend most of your recovery in the setting where you feel most comfortable.

Rehabilitation

Your treatment plan may begin with rehabilitation, which helps you improve your abilities and reduce pain. You might benefit from:

  • Occupational Therapy – Teaches you how to regain the use of your shoulder for everyday tasks
  • Physical Therapy – Builds strength and flexibility with exercise, stretches and hands-on techniques
