What to Expect

Inpatient Rehabilitation programs are designed to work with you to improve function. Patients on the rehabilitation unit have more responsibility in their own care. Rehabilitation focuses on teaching you and your loved ones how to take care of you. This may include managing your own medications to prepare you for going home.

You will have at least three hours of therapy, five days per week and on weekends and holidays as needed. Therapy programs are made to meet your needs. An iPad, Nintendo® Wii™ and other advanced technology may be used as part of your therapy. You also may choose to join in evening activities with our volunteers or sit on the patio and enjoy some fresh air.

On the Rehabilitation Unit, personal clothes are worn throughout the day. Your therapy will require comfortable clothing and shoes. Please bring:

  • Loose fitting shirts or sweatshirts (three or four)
  • Loose fitting slacks or sweatpants (three or four) — elastic waistbands are the most comfortable
  • Pajamas/robe
  • Walking shoes (no flip-flops please)
  • Underwear and socks (a one-week supply)

If you are unsure what to wear, ask your therapist during your first visit. A member of our staff will wash your clothing if needed.

Remember to bring personal items such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, cell phone, cosmetics and toiletries. You also may wish to bring pictures or other reminders of home or hobby items such as books, puzzles and crafts to help you adjust to your new environment.

How Loved Ones Are Involved

Your loved ones are essential members of the Rehabilitation team. We encourage them to be involved in the recovery process.

  • In addition to providing moral support, your loved ones are invited to take part in therapy sessions to learn techniques to help you after you are discharged.
  • Our team reviews your progress and barriers to discharge with you and your loved ones during a weekly team meeting.
  • The people you designate can stay informed about your progress by calling a dedicated number to speak directly with the nursing staff.
  • Our visiting hours are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily to encourage an optimal healing environment.

When You Leave

Discharge planning begins when you are admitted to the Rehabilitation Unit. The Rehabilitation team will work with you and your loved ones to make plans for home care, medical equipment, outpatient therapies or other community resources.

After leaving the Rehabilitation Unit, many of our patients are able to go home with help from additional services or loved ones.
