CentraCare Priority

Workplace Safety

Workplace Violence impacts almost all employees in health care. In a 2020 study, 76% of nurses reported they had been involved in a workplace violence incident involving a patient or visitor during the past year. For nurses in high-risk areas, like Emergency Departments, that percentage increased to 97% (Dailey, 2020).

Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics also reveals that in 2018, health care and social service workers were five times more likely to experience workplace violence than all other workers—comprising 73% of all non-fatal workplace injuries and illnesses requiring days away from work.

Exposure to workplace violence can impair patient care and lead to psychological distress, job dissatisfaction, absenteeism, high turnover, and higher costs.

At CentraCare, 614 incidents of workplace violence were reported across the system in FY 2022. Some of these incidents involved your physician colleagues as well.

In 2021, the CentraCare Facilities, Security, and Emergency Preparedness departments conducted site assessments throughout the organization to review physical safety and security. Each site was scored with a risk number, ranging from 1 to 5. Several changes already are made, and more are planned within the next fiscal year.

Of course, improved workplace safety also comes at a cost. But you can help.

Monticello: Mental Health/Resiliency

In Monticello, we are raising money to support initiatives to improve mental health and resiliency. The Bounce Back Project™ is designed to impact the lives of individuals, communities, and organizations by promoting health through happiness. Numerous studies have shown that using simple tools to help us retrain our mind to focus on the positive can increase feelings of well-being and decrease feelings of depression. These tools also can open us to the possibility of greater social connections, improved sleep, enhanced memory and stronger immune system function. It’s simple … and life changing.

Redwood Falls: Cancer Support Fund

We are fortunate to have the expertise and the latest treatments to manage or cure a wide range of cancers. Unfortunately, many patients with cancer may experience financial challenges during their treatment. That’s why the Cancer Support Fund is available to help patients with travel, lodging, or other financial hardships they may face during treatment. The Cancer Support Fund was established for people who are receiving cancer care at the Cancer Center in Willmar or at our Litchfield, Montevideo, Benson and Redwood Falls sites.

Sauk Centre Care Center

We are happy to share that phase one of construction on our senior living campus is nearing completion and Phase 2 will soon begin with an expected completion date of fall 2023. This project includes the addition of 33 private, long-term care suites and three double suites. This $15-million project will create resident-centered living spaces that feel more like home and provide greater independence and dignity. Its efficient design will benefit residents and staff. Philanthropic support of $2.7 million is still needed to help us reach our $5-million fundraising goal. These funds would provide Care Center enhancements that would not otherwise be possible, such as televisions, landscape and window upgrades, a porch and patio furniture.
