Peace of mind is key to independence

beloved cat, Henry, for Christmas in 2007. It was the first Christmas
they celebrated in St. Cloud after moving from Washington, DC.

I’ve had a CentraCare Health Medical Alert Service system since 2010 when my husband, Al, was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Time is precious when you’re in pain or bleeding, can’t breathe, or are running a high fever. He would fall and I wasn’t strong enough to lift him; when he became delirious from medications and the stage of his cancer, with the press of a button I could quickly get help for him without ever leaving his side.

My dear husband passed away in my arms Aug. 3, 2014. Life without him has been terribly difficult and lonely. The one stability in my life since losing Al has been my Medical Alert Service system. I feel like there’s someone here to watch over me. I have health issues, including vertigo and falling, and have had seven operations on my left leg in the past year, but I know help is as close as the push of a button.

I feel so much safer with my Medical Alert Service button. When the system was set up in my new home, a very nice installer completed a range test to determine how far from the base unit my button is active for me. I can be working on jigsaw puzzles in the Community Room, washing clothes in the Laundry Room, or getting my mail and I can hit the button and get help right away. That’s so cool!

Emergency response service gives daughter peace of mind

LenhardtSusan Lenhardt of St. Paul is grateful for the peace of mind having an emergency response system in place for her parents gave.

The Lenhardts first subscribed to the emergency response system through St. Cloud Hospital in the early ’90s. It allowed Susan’s mother, Alice, to be away from their St. Cloud home for short periods of time after her husband, Pete, suffered a stroke. Alice was able to run errands and attend church without worrying about her husband’s safety.

After Susan’s father died in 2006, she was relieved to know that her mom also would be able to call for help with the push of a button.

Alice suffered from COPD (Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary Disease), which left her lightheaded and prone to falling. She also had shoulder surgery that same year.

“I worried Mom would fall and nobody would find her until I got there,” Susan said. “In 2013, Mom had a heart attack. Through the emergency response service, Mom was able to get the help she needed,” Susan said.

The service was used several times each year up until Alice’s death in May 2014.

“The emergency response system was the best money we ever spent,” said Susan. “It helped Mom stay in her house until the very end. She lived the way she wanted to.”
